Dear Parishioners,

This week we have a Holy Day of Obligation. Friday is the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven. Mass will be Thursday evening at 7:00. After Mass we will have a watermelon feed. Please come. Mass on Friday 8:30a.m. Some have asked where this feast comes from since there is no mention of it in the bible. Catholics get their teachings from two sources. The bible is one source of revelation and the other source is Tradition. Sacred Tradition is the unwritten word of God that the prophets and apostles received through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. So the teaching of the Assumption of Mary into heaven in not found in the bible but it was believed and taught by the apostles. This is Tradition that is inspired and so taught. The Church teaches that after Mary lived here on earth, she was assumed body and soul into the glory of heaven. Mary’s Assumption was defined by the church because she was the Mother of God; she was free from all sin; her body was preserved in spotless chastity; and she shared in her Son’s redemptive work in the world. I hope this helps with your understanding of why we believe in the Assumption of Mary into Heaven.

Questions about St. Paul

1. Why doesn’t the Acts of the Apostles describe Paul’s death? The author of Acts decided it was more important to stress Paul’s real purpose as a preacher to the Gentiles rather than stressing how he died. It might have been a more hopeful purpose to show how Paul was a preacher and how many came to believe. It also summarizes how the Gentiles became the hearers of the Word and ultimately fashioned a new faith community.

2. Is the author of Acts Luke and wasn’t he a companion of Paul? Wouldn’t he know all about Paul? It is possible that the Luke who was a companion of Paul is the author of Acts of the Apostles and yes he would have information about him.

Have a great week.
